About Brodie Cashmere
Brodie Cashmere is a British luxury knitwear brand specialising in pure cashmere
pieces for women. Brodie is designed in Yorkshire and known for its striking
use of colour, ethical sourcing practices and cashmere that is built to last. Brodie
Cashmere also has a cotton brand called WISPR, specialising in premium cotton
pieces.
Brodie Cashmere was founded by mother and daughter Anne-Marie and Jes, united by a shared vision to create luxury cashmere that is as consciously made as it is beautiful. From the outset, Brodie set out to do things differently, sourcing Grade-A Mongolian cashmere directly from herdsmen and working closely with the Sustainable Fibre Alliance to protect both the land and the communities behind every garment.
Brodie Cashmere is a British brand designed in Yorkshire, United Kingdom. Our cashmere
is sourced directly from the herdsmen of Mongolia, where some of the world's finest Grade-A cashmere fibres are produced.
Brodie Cashmere is based in Leeds, Yorkshire, in the United Kingdom. Our design team works from our Yorkshire studio where every piece in the collection is created.
Whilst we may be based in Yorkshire, we ship worldwide!
What makes Brodie different?
Several things set Brodie apart in the luxury cashmere market. We source only Grade-A
Mongolian cashmere directly from the herdsmen, giving us complete control over
quality and traceability from fibre to finished garment. Our cashmere fibres
are 20% longer than those found in other regions, which means less pilling,
better durability, and a piece that holds its shape wash after wash.
Most of our cashmere is machine washable, making everyday luxury actually practical. We are proud members of the Sustainable Fibre Alliance, and we work closely with Fairtrade organisations to ensure every person in our supply chain is fairly treated. And at the heart of everything is colour – bold, considered, and
distinctly Brodie.
Brodie uses only Grade-A Mongolian cashmere, the highest grade available. Our fibres measure 42mm in length, which is 20% longer than cashmere from many other regions. Longer fibres produce a stronger, more durable yarn that is less prone to pilling and misshaping over time. Every garment is knitted to a high standard with us overseeing the quality at every stage, from combing and spinning through to the finished knit. The result is cashmere that feels exceptional from the first wear and for the many years that follow.
Pilling is a common concern with cashmere but Brodie's approach to quality significantly reduces it. Longer fibres produce a tighter, more stable yarn that is far less likely to pill than the shorter fibres used in lower-quality cashmere. Because of this we use fibres measuring 42mm in length, which is 20% longer than other fibres used. With the right care, a cold machine wash and drying flat, your Brodie piece should remain beautifully smooth for years to come.
Brodie Cashmere offers luxury knitwear at accessible luxury price points, reflecting
the quality of our Grade-A Mongolian cashmere and the care that goes into every piece. Our collection ranges from accessories and lighter pieces through to cashmere jumpers, cardigans and loungewear. We also offer an Outlet Archive where previous season pieces are available at reduced prices.
Brodie Cashmere makes a wonderful gift. Our pieces are beautifully presented and designed to be cherished for years, making them a great choice for birthdays, Christmas, Mother's Day or any special occasion. If you are unsure of size or colour, our e-gift cards are available to purchase directly from our website, allowing the recipient to choose their own perfect piece.
Our sustainability & ethics
Sustainability is central to everything we do at Brodie. We source our Grade-A cashmere directly from herdsmen in Mongolia, cutting out middlemen and keeping the cashmere industry local to support the communities and economy that depend on it.
Our vertical supply chain, covering processing, dyeing, spinning, and knitting, is managed entirely in Mongolia, which minimises unnecessary shipping, reduces carbon emissions, and limits waste. We
are proud members of the Sustainable Fibre Alliance (SFA), which works to protect the grasslands of Mongolia and the livelihoods of the herders who work them.
We also implement deadstock initiatives to reduce waste, and we partner with Smart Works, a charity that dresses and coaches unemployed women back into the workforce. Caring for your Brodie piece properly is itself an act of sustainability, our cashmere is designed to last for years, not seasons.
Yes. Brodie works exclusively with the herders of Mongolia who follow traditional, animal-friendly practices. Rather than shearing, the goats are hand-combed during the natural spring moulting season when they shed their winter undercoat. This process takes up to five hours per animal and causes no harm or distress.
The goats are not farmed intensively; they roam freely across the Mongolian steppe as they have for centuries. We are committed to working only with producers who share our values and our membership of the Sustainable Fibre Alliance ensures those standards are independently upheld.
The Sustainable Fibre Alliance is an internationally recognised non-profit organisation that sets and monitors standards for responsible cashmere production in Mongolia. It works across the entire supply chain to ensure that cashmere production is environmentally sound, socially responsible and economically fair.
For Brodie, SFA membership means our sourcing practices are independently verified against rigorous standards. It means the pastures our goats graze on are protected, the herders we work with are fairly supported and the cashmere you buy has been produced with genuine care for people and planet. When you see the SFA mark, you can be confident the cashmere behind it has been made the right way.
Understanding cashmere quality
The highest quality cashmere is Grade-A, which refers to fibres that are the finest in diameter and the longest in length. Fibre diameter is measured in microns, with a lower micron count, meaning softer and finer cashmere. Grade-A cashmere typically measures between 14 and 15.5 microns, which is what gives the very
best cashmere its distinctive softness against the skin.
Length matters too – longer fibres produce a stronger, more stable yarn that is less prone to pilling. The finest Grade-A cashmere comes from Mongolia, where cashmere goats develop an exceptionally dense, soft undercoat in response to the extreme cold.
At Brodie, we use only Grade-A Mongolian cashmere with fibres measuring 42mm in length, 20% longer than cashmere from many other regions.
Mongolia is widely regarded as the source of the world's finest cashmere. Mongolian cashmere goats live on the high steppe plateau, where temperatures can drop below -30°C in winter. These extreme conditions cause the goats to develop an exceptionally soft, dense undercoat, the raw material for premium cashmere. The fibres produced in Mongolia tend to be finer, longer and softer than those from other cashmere-producing regions such as China, Iran or Afghanistan.
At Brodie, all of our cashmere is sourced directly from Mongolia, ensuring we use only the finest fibres available.
The difference comes down to fibre quality, construction, and how the garment is finished. Cheap cashmere typically uses shorter, coarser fibres and are often blended with other materials or loosely knitted to reduce cost. This results in a garment that may feel soft initially but pills quickly, loses its shape, and deteriorates after a few washes.
Expensive cashmere uses longer, finer Grade-A fibres that are tightly spun into a more durable yarn. The knit is denser, the finish is cleaner, and the garment holds its shape and softness over years of wear. A well-made cashmere piece from a quality brand is a long-term investment, the cost per wear over its lifetime is far lower than a cheaper alternative that needs replacing after a season.
Genuine cashmere has a few distinguishing characteristics. It is exceptionally soft but not slippery – if a fabric feels silky or synthetic, it may contain artificial fibres. Real cashmere has a slight natural texture and warmth to the touch.
Always check the label for 100% cashmere and look for reputable brands that are transparent about their sourcing. At Brodie, all of our cashmere pieces are clearly labelled and sourced directly from verified Mongolian herdsmen, so you can be confident in exactly what you are buying.
Neither is inherently better than the other, they have different purposes. Ply refers to the number of yarn strands twisted together to make the finished yarn. 2-ply cashmere is lighter and finer, making it ideal for layering pieces, spring and summer styles or those who prefer a more delicate knit. 4-ply cashmere is heavier and warmer, better suited to winter jumpers and pieces you want to wear as a standalone layer in colder weather.
The quality of the underlying fibre matters far more than the ply count with a 2-ply garment made from Grade-A Mongolian cashmere far outlasting a 4-ply piece made from lower-grade fibre.
A 70% wool, 30% cashmere blend can be a reasonable choice for those looking for durability at a lower price point, but it is a significant step down from pure cashmere in terms of softness and feel. Wool fibres are coarser than cashmere, so the higher the wool content the less of that characteristic cashmere softness you will experience.
That said, wool adds resilience and can make a garment more hardwearing. There are some wools that are softer than others, so a mix of something like merino wool and cashmere will produce a soft feel, similar to that of pure cashmere.
Cashmere vs other fibres
Yes, despite being much lighter than wool cashmere is warmer. Cashmere fibres are finer and have a hollow core that traps air and retains body heat more efficiently than wool. This means a cashmere garment can provide more warmth at a fraction of the weight of a comparable wool piece.
Cashmere is also a natural temperature regulator so in cooler weather it holds in warmth, while in milder temperatures the fibres absorb moisture and keep you comfortable rather than overheated. This is why cashmere works so well across seasons and why a well-made cashmere piece can replace several heavier wool garments in your wardrobe.
Pashmina and cashmere come from the same source, the soft undercoat of cashmere goats but the terms are not quite interchangeable. Pashmina refers specifically to the finest, softest fibres combed from the underbelly of Himalayan cashmere goats. These fibres are exceptionally fine, typically measuring between 12 and 15 microns.
Cashmere is the broader term for all fibres produced from cashmere goats. In practice, many products sold as pashmina are blended with silk or synthetic fibres to achieve a particular drape or sheen, so it is always worth checking the label carefully.
Cashmere is one of the world's finest natural fibres but it does require a little more care than everyday fabrics. The main considerations are cost, care and pilling.
Genuine high-quality cashmere commands a higher price than wool or synthetic alternatives, reflecting the rarity of the fibre and the labour involved in producing it. Cashmere also requires careful washing, with most pieces requiring to be washed on a gentle cycle or by hand and laid flat to dry rather than tumble dried or hung.
Lower quality cashmere can be prone to pilling, though this is significantly reduced when longer Grade-A fibres are used, as with Brodie. Finally, cashmere can be vulnerable to moths if stored incorrectly.
Genuine high-quality cashmere shouldn't be itchy. The ultra-fine fibres of Grade-A cashmere are soft enough to wear comfortably directly against the skin, which is one of the qualities that sets it apart from wool. Itchiness in cashmere garments is usually a sign of lower quality fibre. Some people with very sensitive skin may still experience mild sensitivity but this is uncommon with premium cashmere.
At Brodie, our Grade-A Mongolian cashmere is selected for its exceptional fineness and softness, and the vast majority of our customers find it comfortable to wear next to the skin.
A genuinely high-quality cashmere sweater from a reputable brand typically starts at around £150 to £200 and can rise considerably from there depending on the brand, ply and construction.
Be cautious of cashmere priced significantly below this. Very cheap cashmere is almost always made from lower-grade, shorter fibres, blended with other materials or loosely knitted to reduce cost, all of which affect how the garment looks and feels over time.
A well-made cashmere sweater is a long-term investment. Cared for properly it can last a decade or more, making the cost per wear far lower than cheaper alternatives that need replacing season after season. At Brodie, our pieces are priced to reflect the Grade-A Mongolian cashmere and ethical production practices that go into every garment.
Caring for your cashmere
Yes you can and with Brodie’s cashmere, it is easier than you might expect. All of our cashmere pieces are machine washable on a cold wash, with the exception of our foil print designs which should be hand washed. Simply turn your garment inside out, select the gentlest wash and shortest spin cycle and use a non-biological detergent. Avoid standard cycles, high temperatures and tumble drying, as these can cause shrinkage and misshaping. Once washed, reshape your garment gently and lay it flat on a drying rack to dry as quickly as possible.
With the right care your Brodie cashmere will look and feel beautiful wash after wash.
Yes cashmere can absolutely be hand washed. Fill a basin with cool water and add a small amount of non-biological detergent. Submerge the garment and gently squeeze the water through the fibres, avoiding rubbing, wringing or twisting, as this can cause the fibres to felt and the garment to lose its shape. Rinse thoroughly in cool water until all detergent is removed, then gently press out the excess water without wringing. Reshape and lay flat on a clean towel or drying rack to dry.
At Brodie, our foil print pieces require hand washing, while the rest of our range can be conveniently machine washed on a cold cycle.
Cashmere is a delicate natural fibre that is vulnerable to stretching under its own weight. Hanging a cashmere garment on a hanger causes the fibres to pull and distort over time, leading to misshaping that is very difficult to reverse. The same applies when drying; always lay cashmere flat on a drying rack rather than hanging it to dry. For storage, fold your cashmere pieces neatly and keep them in a drawer or on a shelf, ideally in a breathable cloth bag to protect against moths. Treating your cashmere with this small amount of extra care will keep your pieces looking their best for years to come.
