You might not be surprised to hear that we are great enthusiasts of the impeccable quality cashmere from which we craft our sought-after garments here at Brodie Cashmere – after all, we wouldn’t otherwise be able to offer you the opportunity to buy cashmere jumpers and sweaters of such remarkable quality.

Many of those who so proudly wear cashmere, however, aren’t so aware of the origins of the material, or for that matter, how it is gathered and turned into the Brodie Cashmere garments that our most loyal customers know and love today.

What is cashmere?

Cashmere fibre is obtained from cashmere goats. Most varieties of these goats live amid cold temperatures and extreme terrain, an environment that results in their growth of a soft, downy undercoat when the chill is at its worst.

The fibre is collected when the goats moult in the spring. The down can be sheared or combed off the animal, but combing tends to result in more cashmere. This pure cashmere is then dyed and spun into yarn and used to knit everything from jumpers and hats to socks.

Where does it come from?

Cashmere has been manufactured in Mongolia, Nepal and Kashmir (from where the material gets its name) for thousands of years. Word about the luxurious material spread in the 18th and 19th centuries to other countries such as France, the UK and the USA. Today, China, Mongolia and other Central Asian countries produce the greatest amount of cashmere.

Why choose cashmere?

Cashmere is often considered superior to sheep’s wool, thanks to its softness and insulating properties – indeed, cashmere is thought to be approximately three times more insulative than sheep’s wool or other wool.

With this in mind, we think there’s no better material to use for the crafting of supremely comfortable and effortlessly stylish jackets, gloves, capes and many more garments and accessories.

Here at Brodie Cashmere, we source all of our cashmere from Outer Mongolia, where our own little herd of hardy cashmere goats endures the lowest temperatures so they can grow a lovely soft undercoat – the very same that helps to make all of our hand-crafted and hand-finished products.

Feel free to contact our team for more information regarding cashmere or the products that we stock, or for help choosing the right Brodie Cashmere garments for you.
